edelgard, 4/2
after sundown, as promised, the two of them had gone to the coven. in the aftermath of a new round of mirrorbound arriving, the coven seems... perhaps not strained, especially with the time that's passed, but still with its priorities largely elsewhere. a staff member they had managed to flag down gave an estimate of about twenty minutes, and most of that has passed.
it would be a lie to claim she feels fully prepared for this. how, in any world, could she be? even if she completely knew what she might be giving edelgard access to, and she doesn't, it's a concern. would the flame emperor see that her wings had been an empty husk all along? or would new parts of her emerge over time that might drive her away? not to mention the things that byleth has kept from her for as long as they've known one another, simply because in her previous state she never found it relevant.
as they sit and wait, she keeps a placid mask in place, but there's tension in her jaw, her hands. she wants this, but as she is now, she finds herself overthinking it. ]
no subject
Intent on making good on her promise to bond her friend immediately, she'd led Byleth to the Coven and reached out to the staff there. It was going to be fine, well, and good. Byleth likely knew what she was getting into, and Edelgard knew well what she was in for at this point. Still, it was hard to wait, as excited as she was. It practically showed on her face...in the form of a warm smile that she didn't bother to mask.
The spartan waiting room was not the best place for her to pace, so she simply sat, keeping a close proximity to her partner.]
Hopefully we don't have to wait too much longer.
no subject
Hopefully not. [ she smiles, a fractional thing, eyes on her now instead of looking at nothing in particular. ] You're excited?
[ she may not look it, but she's a bit surprised. that hadn't quite come through to her before. ]
no subject
I am.
[She absolutely is. She has that smile that could light up a room hidden away, right now, but it'll come.]
You don't...understand...maybe what this link is like. It feels incredible, being connected to someone else. It's a profound experience, and I sincerely am glad to be sharing it with you.

MEANWHILE AT THE HALL OF MIRRORS (memshare)
the wood appears like bone, but burnt and slightly damaged around the very edges. across the white bone, it's streaked and flecked irregularly with a dark grey ash that, when touched, doesn't come away. two pairs of wings crown it: one an eagle's wings spread proudly, appearing to be made of inlaid polished black stone, the other a drooping, skeletal pair of...bat? dragon? wings made from silver, with what appear to be wilted lilies woven around the bones. a chain motif extends upwards from the wings, made of the same silver, and crosses over a ruby design of an anatomical heart bearing the mark of the crest of flames that rests between the black wings, as if binding the heart even as it tries to soar away. above the heart is the double-headed eagle of the adrestian empire. around the sides, motifs related to time can be seen—hourglasses, clock hands, and the like. the last visible motif before the apparent fire damage becomes too much is the sword of the creator fully extended around most of the mirror's circumference—from one side of the wings to the other—and interwoven with red carnations, again in ruby.
at the center of it all, the mirror calls. ]
[ ooc: so here's how this is gonna work, i'm gonna put starters (some closed, some open) below this and if you want a specific thing just hmu let's go. or if you just want me to throw fucking whatever at your character just have them go in and i'll throw whatever random memory. ]
.lorenz
the emperor and her two closest advisers finally stop conferring, and the battalions begin moving, the flying divisions—one led by ingrid, another by leonie—striking out to try to harass the almyrans in advance of the ground troops.
byleth, the present day one, steps up alongside lorenz, in a simple white shirt and black trousers.]
I suppose you're getting your answers.
no subject
[Lorenz stood on the outskirts of the scene, For once in these shared dreams, he was just a man and little more. Bereft of his armor and familiar lance, he was dressed in plain clothes similar to Byleth. With dreams being the vague concepts that they were, Lorenz didn't quite recall what Byleth was speaking of-- all that sat with him was a distant understanding that she had known something that wasn't right for a regular person to know.]
Perhaps in more ways than one. This is Derdriu, but the Almyrans have long been a thorn in our side. What did Claude do?
no subject
[ the battle begins. byleth starts striding forward at her usual clip, gesturing for lorenz to follow. dream-byleth and her soldiers, along with several other battalions in the strike force, start working through the city, and the battle is joined. droves of alliance soldiers are mowed down by the commanders, not even to mention the push by the troops under their leadership backing them. hilda appears to be in command of the defenses in the city center, still a decent distance from the imperial soldiers. ]

the present-day byleth, not all green and dressed much more simply, glances to the stranger. she recognizes this moment, it's just before things went wrong on the western side of the field when the church tried to retake garreg mach. but why is the mirror showing this to this kid? ]
Hello.
APOLOGIES I got drunk, so this tag is what it is
From the future? Who knows? From the past? Maybe? He's only got a pretty basic understanding of how these mirrors work.
But as he watches the scene play out before him, he does turn and offer Byleth a wider smile than seems appropriate for two people watching an intense battle play out. ]
Hello!
.felix
the present-day byleth speaks up from behind felix. ]
You're about to see. [ she steps around to stand next to him. ]
no subject
Felix starts at the sound of Byleth's voice from behind him, hissing under his breath as he spins around. ]
And what, exactly, am I supposed to see?

rhea maintains that icy rage, contempt dripping from every word. "professor, kill edelgard at once. she is a danger to all of fódlan. such a rebellious heart cannot be allowed to keep beating."
the moment is as byleth remembers it. everything appears to slow down and silence around them, the ambient sounds from the students going silent. there's nothing but a heartbeat, the sound all-encompassing. ]

.edelgard
kostas, who had appeared to be defeated, launches back up to his feet and rushes towards the phantom of the younger edelgard.
byleth moves to the present-day edelgard's side and grasps her hand. she's told edelgard about this, but... this is something altogether different. the memory of her past self moves quickly, without thinking, turning her back to kostas and pushing dream-edelgard out of the way. and just as the axe begins to bite into her flesh, the scene warps and stops, as if a ripple coming from dream-byleth herself. the colors of everything before them invert. ]
... I suppose you'll get to meet her.
no subject
...You mean...Sothis?
no subject
[ the scene in front of them shifts to a dark void, with the only visible feature being a throne identical to the one in the holy tomb, atop a high dais with steps. the phantom byleth stands in the same position she had before, wound now gone. she looks around in confusion, like she's not used to this kind of change happening.
sothis, leaning her head on one hand and relaxing against an arm of the throne, speaks up before the past byleth faces her. ]
Honestly! What are you accomplishing with that little stunt?! It's like you're trying to get me killed, you fool! [ sothis's brief flare of annoyance fades as the past byleth turns, and she pushes herself into a more proper position in her seat. the shade of the goddess lets out a theatrical sigh. there's very little proper about her behavior. ] Well, it's fine. After all, if you don't know the value of your own life, you're not going to protect it very well, are you? Course not...

.leslie
a man who had appeared to be defeated launches back up to his feet and rushes towards the phantom of the younger edelgard, axe in hand. dream-edelgard pulls a dagger, holding it up in an effort to guard. byleth steps up to leslie's side, resting a hand on her shoulder. this might not be something for a child to see.
the memory of byleth rushes between edelgard and the apparent bandit, pushing her out of the way and placing her back to the man... he swings to attack, and the scene warps and stops, as if a ripple is coming from dream-byleth herself. the colors of everything before them invert. nothing moves. ]
This was... the day Edelgard and I first met.
no subject
(odd that byleth doesn’t look any younger here, really. she must have aged gracefully.)
byleth will be able to feel leslie tense a little through the hand on her shoulder as the bandit and edelgard near collision. it would be more if leslie didn’t have a very firm belief in edelgard’s strength, at least in modern day, but she’s never seen two humans fight where both were armed.
and then there’s memory byleth, diving in between without any obvious preparations to protect herself and leslie flinches.
when she doesn’t hear an impact, she opens her eyes again. okay, this colour inversion tops seeing younger versions of people in the strangeness rankings. ]
Are you always this, um. [ “reckless” seems like a rude way to put it. ] Without a weapon, isn’t that really dangerous?
no subject

the present-day byleth glances to saber with a faint bit of surprise on her face. ]
Why did the mirrors show you this, I wonder...?
no subject
I do not know; perhaps it will become clearer in time.
[ The woman from the church is preparing to pass judgment. And what will the younger Byleth do? ]
You and Edelgard have a long history, I see.

petra, 4/5
the former professor isn't particularly keeping an eye out for petra, writing in a notebook as the tea and cups arrive. ]
no subject
As she walks in, an array of pleasant smells hit her and she suppresses the urge to flick her tongue out to taste the air and sort out what she's smelling. It's one change she's keen on not letting anyone see. Ever. But the instinct to use it is there.
She easily spots Byleth and promptly walks over, taking a seat with a shallow bow of her head in greeting.]
Thank you for having tea with me.
I... want to be giving you my apology. When we met before I was listening only to my curiosity and you were having fatigue from battle.
no subject
Thank you for coming. I know that this is... [ she considers how best to put this. ] It must be difficult for you, too. We both could have handled this better. [ so, no apology is necessary, petra. she spoons a touch of honey into her own tea, ] Have you settled in well?
