DARKNESS AND FROST log

DARKNESS AND FROST

A message is sent on the network on the 20th, informing the Mirrorbounds about the developments regarding a quest posted earlier in the month on the board.

Word comes from the Wilders’ headquarters in Dorchacht that there haven’t been that many sightings of the Nuckelavee for a long time. Most assumed that whatever the Mirrorbounds did must have driven the ghastly creatures away for good. Clearly, not a single person missed them. It is a nasty surprise to learn that not only did they not disappear completely, but now, angrier than ever, they pose a threat to Aefenglom as well.

THE NORTHERN OUTPOST ( 21st - 26th )

The Northern Outpost has seen steady development since its establishment, but nothing on a scale that could make it possible to survive an attack of demonic beasts. So it becomes a whirlwind of activity. There are ditches to dig, magical wards and barriers to set up, weapons and armour need inspection and some alchemical supplies are easier found in the surrounding forest rather than back in Aefenglom, but no one should go procuring them alone. But there are more mundane tasks too! With the sudden increase in population, the self-appointed kitchen staff of the Northern Outpost is barely managing to keep all the mouths fed and all the dishes washed (and pesky rodents kept away). All help will be enthusiastically welcomed no matter the level of culinary aptitude. There’s enough work for everyone.

Not far from the Outpost itself, a new structure rises from the ground quickly, incorporating a nearby shallow cave. That’s the Enclosure, the place where researchers who intend to study the Nuckelavee plan to lure one of the creatures. The construction has barely started, and there is much to do before it can hold its captive inside. Engineers, Arachne, Witches adept in Enchantment and Abjuration - all are welcome to lend their hands (as many as they can spare) in this scientific endeavor. It could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to further or even create a completely new field of study!

Mirrorbounds are encouraged to return and rest within the city, but should you decide to stay for the night, the moods are rather sour and tense. Still, people do try to enjoy the evening break, at least those who get it - night guards work in shifts. Someone makes a bonfire and encourages sharing stories as the night passes to lift morale. A chilling Nuckelavee scream might stop the relaxing and put everyone on edge. But it seems the creatures are refusing to come out just yet.

THE SLUMS 21st - 26th

Sprawling from the Other Side of the Bright Wall, the Outer City grows outward with no particular organisation or order, with buildings’ integrity decreasing the closer they are to the edge of the Wilde. While some of the inhabitants greet the aid provided with gratitude, there are many who treat it with distrust and their own fate at the mercy of yet another incomprehensible danger with blood-chilling apathy. Much work has been done by numerous Mirrorbound to help those living in the Slums but the memory of all those lost to the frost when the city shut its gates and left them to die casts a long shadow on all attempts to defend against this new threat.

Deprived of the comforts of magitech ubiquitous for the citizens of the city proper, the inhabitants of the Slums find their own creative ways to provide life’s necessities to each other. Carrying water has always been a task for younger ones in the families. A worrying number of those that go fetch water from a far away stream do not come home on time. They could have gotten distracted chasing a stray dog, roped in some mischief by other kids, or genuinely lost. With the new threat lurking in the darkness, people get increasingly nervous. What would look like harmless disobedience in quieter times now turns into an emergency. Investigate where the missing children have gone, find them and bring them home if you can.

Not all are happy for the help. There’s a certain figure frequently spoken about and often seen at the scenes of the especially vicious attacks: a man with unkempt hair and ragged clothing prophesying that those very horrors are no accident. That the beasts are a punishment for a terrible offence: accepting the foreign devils - those who came through the Mirrors - into the city. As time passes and the attacks continue, it starts to become obvious those who were in contact with the Mirrorbound are more likely to become targets of the hellish creatures, which lends credence to the madman’s words. Some denizens of the slums are just scared, but some become suspicious of the very presence of any Mirrorbounds in the area. Even those that come to help. Calm downthe fearful, convince the sceptics or find the sower of this panic and make him stop spreading his incendiary message.

Some people have locked themselves in their homes and refuse to go out. You could try to reason with them or simply bring supplies at the door. Or try to convince them to help with building a protective wall around the Slums, sturdy enough to stay. Some of the people who open their doors might show low-level signs of Cwyld infection. They wonder if you’re still willing to help them knowing that?

When the darkness of night emboldens the Nuckelavee to venture further into the Slums proper, a group of Mirrorbounds take to patrolling the streets. But they could use more help. Protect those unfortunate enough to walk the streets at that time, chase away or kill the creatures that dared to come closer, and fight to protect the poor souls they chose to hunt.

NIGHT OF THE HUNT (night between 26th-27th)

Are you prepared for the fight of your life? You better be!

A heavy blizzard rages on the night of the 26th, giving a strange glow to the camp in the darkness as the light is dithered among falling snowflakes. Visibility is low, but some believe that nature itself can be used to help the hunters and defenders. To those who wish to take on this responsibility, several enchanted wands are given, with quick instructions how to use them to direct the winds of the blizzard for a short time. They can be used either to protect the warriors or against the creatures. The wands have only a few charges and will break upon using them up.

Every Mirrorbound and Wilder either present from the start or joining the group through the portal connecting with Aefenglom will be given a quick rundown of the camp, where the protection wards lie, what powers the barriers, and where weapons can be found. There are two sets of barriers around the camp -- the outer one that has multiple holes for the creatures to pour into, and the inner barrier that has to be held at all cost, as it protects people within. The plan is to lure the Nuckelavee for a frontal attack, let them pass through the outer barrier, let the inner barrier stop them, and then— close the barrier behind them, effectively shutting them in a walled ring.

Then they can be exterminated safely. Stun them, kill them, use spells or pointy sticks or guns — and maybe just maybe you can capture one alive. Fortunately, they don’t seem to have any kind of natural resistance towards mundane or magical weapons. They are just tough to kill and incredibly vicious, but limiting their movement should do the trick.

The barriers and wards only last full-strength as long as they are powered so Witches not focused on fighting are encouraged to do a recharging run along the campsite. Anyone needing a breather from the fray or whose focus is better spent on support can also bring ammo, or more weapons to counter the broken (or stolen) ones. Dragging out wounded fighters into the safety of the camp and healing them is also an important task, as neither Mirrorbounds nor Wilders lack in people who would fight to their last breath.

That’s the plan. How does it go in reality, though?

The Nuckelavee attack starts with chilling shrieks all around the Outpost before they emerge from the darkness. Those who have not yet met any of them will have a chance to witness that their aggression and looks are as terrifying as the stories said. They resemble a horse fused with a rider, with sharp teeth and without skin, raw body exposed. The creatures are not infected but are vicious, hardy, and strong, and they hunger for human and Monster flesh alike. Some might pick up weapons thrown at them; others will circle and try to isolate their chosen targets. Should they be angered, while in a furious rage they gain both speed and strength, but they lose focus and lack strategic thinking. So enraging them can break the formation, but it also makes them far more dangerous up close. They are susceptible to both magical and physical attacks alike, and beheading (of either the flayed-open horse head or the screaming man's head) will put them down permanently.

Be mindful of your comrades! It’s easy to lose each other in the blizzard. Nuckelavee don’t bleed red (they don’t bleed much at all), so any red trails on the snow belong to an ally. Don’t let the beasts drag wounded away. Get them to the healers who wait within the camp enclosed with the inner barrier.

During the fight, several crystal devices that strengthen the outer barrier start malfunctioning. That means the outer barrier cannot be closed shut, meaning a change of plans is in order. Several brave volunteers are needed from among Wilders and Mirrorbounds to leave the safety of the inner barrier and take the battle directly to the creatures, while locating and exchanging the malfunctioning crystals. This is an incredibly dangerous job, and everyone willing to undertake it is encouraged not to do so alone. Once the trap is sprung and the outer barrier shut, it would also lock those volunteers out of the safety of the camp -- unless they’re willing to try a teleport spell or wait for someone inside to handle the teleporting for them. The help will come, but until it does, they are on their own and straggling Nuckelavee that did not fall into the trap might still pose a danger to them...

The fight drags for what feels like hours, and the air grows colder and colder. Meanwhile, some of the trapped Nuckelavee figure out that they might get into the camp if they find holes within the barrier -- and one makes its way inside. Through the heavy snow, it might not be obvious at first, but something is happening within the camp… The Nuckelavee that furiously breach the barrier wreak havoc behind the safe line, attacking anyone it sees until it’s killed or subdued.

Eventually, after what feels like an eternity, all of the creatures fall and the dead remain under the snow. Well… most of them. There were attempts to capture one of them alive, and while keeping them alive turns out to be even harder than just catching them (not only Nuckelavee perished that night… some might still want revenge for that, some want to end the threat once and for all), one of them remains. The battle has been won.

THE AFTERMATH (27th and later)

As day breaks over the horizon, the true damage can be seen. One Nuckelavee is thrashing, captured in the closed enclave. It howls and shrieks and won’t be reasoned with. It hates everything and everyone, and seems to be incapable of speech. Wilders have decided they will keep it alive for a week, and not a day longer (that is till 3rd September OOCly). Nuckelavee have proven to be cunning creatures, and the risk of it escaping is just too great.

Aside from that issue, there is still clean-up to be done, and mourning for those who have fallen in battle. The Wilders agree to give the Nuckelavee corpses to those interested in acquiring them for study/experimentation, but otherwise they plan on burning everything that’s left.

The following two evenings, there’s a victory celebration at The Sordid Shield. Everyone still able to stand is welcome, -- and drinks are free! Unfortunately, not everyone is happily drinking; there are those who lost comrades and are mourning the fallen. Others came out alive but require medical attention that on-field healers cannot give. The general mood could be described as grimly triumphant. The unexpected threat has been taken care of, but not without a cost.

[Ok, she looks mad, which Hector tries to parse before he gets hauled down by the ear. The sensitive sheep ear. He yelps.]

Owww, fuck! Let go! What the hell is wrong with doing my research?

[He's not trying to get himself killed, he just tends to put himself in very dangerous situations without fully assessing the consequences.]

I'm not a child, I don't need a fucking chaperone.

[personal profile] needsteaplz 2020-08-28 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. You. Do. [ She finally lets go of his ear with a huff. ]

You get tunnel vision whenever you start a project. I don't know if this world's nuckelavee are anything like the ones at home but I refuse to let you go alone! We were all warned that's the one thing NOT to do out here.

[All of her knowledge of this terrifying beast was only based on books, which put her at an disadvantage that gave her some dread. She sighs and pulls her coat closer together. On one hand, she'd be enabling him, but perhaps she could negotiate a middle ground that won't make him resent her forever. ]

Look, I get you're set on doing this research, so there's no point in trying to dissuade you. Sure I could literally throw you back into the city, but I already gave you enough trauma with a jump scare. But the moment I get a sense of bloodlust coming out it or it doesn't come in an hour, we are leaving. Are we clear?
petcromancer: (thinking)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-08-28 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Hector scowls and rubs his sore ear.]

Fine, have it your way. [Saori's got a predator's strength and a stronger will regarding Hector's safety, so he resigns himself to doing as he's told. So long as he still gets to do his work, he can suffer through that.

His lips tighten into a line as he looks out at the bloody meat in the snow.]

I don't expect you to understand, but I have to try this. What if everyone's wrong about them? They're going to hunt the nucklavee tomorrow. If they are killing them just because they look monstrous... I need to know for sure.
needsteaplz: ("...")

[personal profile] needsteaplz 2020-08-28 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
[ Saori rubbed her hands for warmth as she scans their surrounding while he works. ]

No, I sort of understand. I'm all for understanding them but we should have more caution based on what we know. As for the others, it's hard to tell what the others are thinking. I'm...just a bit disappointed you didn't ask for help.
petcromancer: (inner thoughts)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-08-29 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Hector snorts. It's obvious why he didn't ask for help. Because anyone he asked would've tried to stop him.]

What is it they say about asking for permission or forgiveness?

[He's... glad, though, that Saori is willing to see from his perspective. It is encouraging as to the level of their...friendship? Whatever they are to each other.]

The creatures here may be different from the ones I'm used to.... It might be like everyone says, beyond reason. And if it is... I need to know.

[It's not just scientific curiosity. It's his world view at stake.

He kneels back down and arranges the bait, then cleans his hands off in the snow.]

We should get out of sight so we can observe it if it comes by.

[The nucklavee is more likely to come for them than for the meat, but Hector doesn't know that.]
needsteaplz: (Concerned)

[personal profile] needsteaplz 2020-08-30 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you're the only one who wants to research and learn more about them. It maybe the unpopular opinion, but we might learn more about it if we have more minds on board with this.

[If Saori had to put a label on their status, it probably would 'complicated' but somehow even that would still feel like an understatement. ]

Alright then, but stay alert. Stay in my line of sight, Hector.

[ She hides behind one of the trees, crouching low as she sniffs the cold air and looks around for any flayed demon horses coming their way. ]
petcromancer: (Determination)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-09-01 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
The rest won't get on board if they believe it's too dangerous to interact with.

[Hector's opinions on his chances of reasoning with the crowd are all very much colored by the mob mentality of medieval Europe.

He nods, and does his best to kick snow over his hoofprints as he retreats behind another tree. There's no hiding that someone has been there beside the bait, but he's hoping it will obscure the exact details and the direction she went in.

He settles in to wait, and his sheep's pupils let him see the shape of a creature approaching a quarter of an hour later. He can't call out to Saori without alerting it, so he does his best to wave at her, then point at the shape in the shadows.]
needsteaplz: ("...")

[personal profile] needsteaplz 2020-09-02 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
[As they wait, Saori has another fight she's dealing with. She figured with her crocodile side she'd have a lower resistance with the weather but now she was feeling a bit...drowsy? She shakes her head to stay awake.

She snaps awake in time to see Hector waving for her attention. Quietly she turns her head, pupils dilating at the silhouette in the distance. ]
petcromancer: (off-balance)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-09-04 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
[Hector's wool gives him some protection against the cold, but it's his curiosity that really keeps him alert. The Nucklavee finally appears through the tree line, and Hector leans forward, eager to see how it reacts.

The creature stomps straight over the now-frozen meat and raises its heads to sniff the air. It seems to catch Hector's movements, and it charges.

Hector raises his palms and tries to scramble to his feet, but his legs are chilled and half-asleep from crouching. He's definitely not outrunning anything with horses' legs.]

Wait, I wish to speak with you!

[He calls out, but the creature gives no indication that it hears or cares.]
needsteaplz: (What did you say?)

[personal profile] needsteaplz 2020-09-04 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Somehow she's not surprised Hector was still trying to get the Nucklavee to listen. Her heart is pounding loudly in her ears. How dare did this demonic horse encroached onto her territory and went after the faun, her predator instincts thought.

Saori didn't fight back against her chimera instincts, letting herself transform as she barreled towards her target. Now a red fox the size of a large crocodile snarled to reveal the sharp teeth of the reptile. At the last second, she twisted her front paws so she could swing the rest of her body, including the long crocodilian tail into the Nucklavee's to slam it towards the nearest tree. The chimera made sure to keep herself between it and the faun.]

Hector, we are going! NOW.
petcromancer: (collapsed)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-09-06 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
[The creature doesn't halt its charge, and Hector leaps out of the way, acting more on prey instinct than any conscious thought. The Nuckelavee rocks as Saori slams into it, colliding into a tree and sending an avalanche of snow cascading from the branches above.]

But- [He protests, too shocked to really process. It... really wants to kill him? Kill him? Monsters don't want to kill Hector. He's a mixture of dumbfounded and offended. Monsters should like him!

He scrambles out of the snow and sees the creature's fiery eye sweep the ground and fix on him. It shrieks. He shrinks back into the snow.]

Why won't it listen?
needsteaplz: (there be thorns under this flower)

[personal profile] needsteaplz 2020-09-08 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I knew, but I won't let it get you. I'll try to buy some time.

[Saori lets out an intimidating deep bellow in return. There is no time to provide Hector any lengthy opinions or comfort due to the flayed horse bent on killing them.

The chimera lunges towards the Nuckelavee. Her jaws snaps down sharply on one of its front legs. While the teeth obviously cause a lot of pain, the power behind her bite is terrifying. She shakes her head while jaws clamp down, all while trying to move away to avoid getting kicked by the other legs. Killing it would take too much energy but she hopes maiming it would give them a bigger chance to escape with their lives.]

petcromancer: (hammer)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-09-08 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hector pulls his hammer from his belt and rises out of the snow once more. He can't just leave Saori to fight the Nuckelavee on her own. He got her into this mess.

The creature is pretty well distracted by the teeth in its leg, Hector circles around it and takes a swing at its (human) head with his hammer. That seems as good a place to start as any.]

needsteaplz: (flesh wound)

[personal profile] needsteaplz 2020-09-11 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
[The hammer connected to the head, causing it to let out another piercing shriek that made even Saori's ears ring. The chimera's teeth sunk harder into the leg with some cracking of bone being heard. Her head thrashed around shredding bits of sinew and flesh. She would have attempted to mimic a crocodile's death roll, but she couldn't with Hector so close by.

The rider fused to the flayed horse was dazed for a few seconds, but began to flail wildly at whoever attacked it. In that moment, Saori lost grip and was thrown back. She rolls away in time before a hoof drove down where her head was. With a snarl, she swung her tail at the bite, causing the Nucklavee to buckle forward.]
petcromancer: (oh shit)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-09-13 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
[The Nuckelavee buckles, and that's as good an opportunity to leave as Hector expects to get. He takes a second passing swing with his hammer as he rushes past toward Saori.

He can't really hope to carry her, but he grabs one of her arms to pull her up with his momentum.]

Time to go!

[Hector's stupidly naive at times, but he's not dumb. The Nuckelavee has proved itself to be irredeemable.]
needsteaplz: (DO NOT WANT)

[personal profile] needsteaplz 2020-09-13 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
No need to tell me twice!

[ She gets up to dash back to wall. This isn't something she wants to handle on such short notice even with Hector's help. Even crippled, the Nuckelavee snaps at the chimera's tail as the two ran off. There's no time to change back yet and thankfully she could keep her speed up in this form. The locals will just have to deal with the shock of seeing a large fox with crocodile traits. ]

I...I think we lost it. You alright?
petcromancer: (Shiver)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-09-14 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Hector finally takes a moment to take stock of himself. He's chilled to the bone, and he finally notices an ache in his ankle that feels like a sprain, but he's alive.]

I'm fine. You? It hit you.

[He may or may not be having some realizations about how close he came to getting himself and a friend killed...

...again.... Fuck, this is kind of on the same level as the time he and his fellow faun, Myr, took on a murderous, skeletal centaur on their own and almost died. Whoops. He slows, and starts shivering violently.]
needsteaplz: (Concerned)

[personal profile] needsteaplz 2020-09-14 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ Maybe it was all the adrenaline rushing through her brain, but she didn't notice the gash on her tail until now. Her eyes shift back towards the Wilde ]

If I ever run into that bastard again, I'm gonna throw it in the nearest river for this.

[Thankfully, no bones are broken but the gash is fairly deep. Also Hector's not the only one feeling the cold. She shakes her head to keep herself awake.]

Let's get back and someone take look at us and get warm. And thank you, for having my back out there.
petcromancer: (Hands)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-09-14 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[A short, ragged chuckle tears from Hector’s throat. Had her back, when she was only here to protect him?

A second, unbidden bark of laughter follows, and He tor can feel himself falling into hysteria. He steps down hard on his injured ankle, and with the pain of impact comes clarity.]

W-we should move quickly. There’s more things out here than the Nuckelavee that’ll smell the blood.
needsteaplz: ("...")

[personal profile] needsteaplz 2020-09-14 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[She's taken aback by Hector's sudden laughter but does realize it's the trauma of outcome messing with him. She can only imagine how his mind must be after all of that. Hopefully once they were safe, she could tend to his other wounds.

Of course Hector had to go so far away from the walls. She looks over her shoulder before transforming back to her usual form. Without asking, she puts Hector's arm over her shoulder so she can help him walk. Plus, the extra body heat would be nice. ]

I know but what's the best way to get back?
petcromancer: (Hmmm)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-09-16 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
[Hector presses close to Saori. He may lack sense, but hopefully he makes up for it in body heat and soft wool.]

As the crow flies, it would be that way, but we'll be out in the open. I think we should keep to the tree line, in case we need to hide.

[The faun sense of direction, coming in handy again.]
needsteaplz: (Concerned)

[personal profile] needsteaplz 2020-09-21 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ It's enough for now at least and should be enough to stave off the urge to hibernate. Carefully, she starts walking through the treeline. In the worse case scenario, Saori could always pick Hector up and run even if it would be at the cost of whatever dignity was left. ]

Alright that should work. But damn, I wish I brought a flare to signal the guards.
petcromancer: (Shiver)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-09-22 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
[Bold of her to assume he had any dignity in the first place.]

A signal would alert everyone in the area, friend or foe.

[So don't feel bad you didn't bring one, Saori. They're a mixed blessing.

He's glad she's back in her normal form. It makes their proximity more comfortable as they share warmth between them. But even with that pleasant distraction, his mind is still caught up on their friend the Nuckelavee.]

...I just can't believe it was so malicious. Irrationally malicious. No monster I've ever encountered has been that bad...
needsteaplz: ("...")

[personal profile] needsteaplz 2020-09-24 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, it didn't go as planned, Hector. It seems the monsters here follow their own world's rules. I've only seen creatures with such behavior after a soul eating gone terribly wrong.

[There's silence for a moment as they continue to walk, save for the crunching of snow beneath their feet.]

If I had to guess, maybe because you don't have your forgemaster abilities here, any positive affinity monsters have towards you is gone as well.
petcromancer: (sulk)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-09-26 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
[His next shiver has nothing to do with the cold.]

...I know. For so long, monsters were my only friends...

[To be so completely forsaken by them now is... it's hard to stomach. There's an ache of loneliness, as he thinks about his younger self, who'd had to rely fully on night creatures to survive.]
