DARKNESS AND FROST log
A message is sent on the network on the 20th, informing the Mirrorbounds about the developments regarding a quest posted earlier in the month on the board.
Word comes from the Wilders’ headquarters in Dorchacht that there haven’t been that many sightings of the Nuckelavee for a long time. Most assumed that whatever the Mirrorbounds did must have driven the ghastly creatures away for good. Clearly, not a single person missed them. It is a nasty surprise to learn that not only did they not disappear completely, but now, angrier than ever, they pose a threat to Aefenglom as well.
THE NORTHERN OUTPOST ( 21st - 26th )
The Northern Outpost has seen steady development since its establishment, but nothing on a scale that could make it possible to survive an attack of demonic beasts. So it becomes a whirlwind of activity. There are ditches to dig, magical wards and barriers to set up, weapons and armour need inspection and some alchemical supplies are easier found in the surrounding forest rather than back in Aefenglom, but no one should go procuring them alone. But there are more mundane tasks too! With the sudden increase in population, the self-appointed kitchen staff of the Northern Outpost is barely managing to keep all the mouths fed and all the dishes washed (and pesky rodents kept away). All help will be enthusiastically welcomed no matter the level of culinary aptitude. There’s enough work for everyone.
Not far from the Outpost itself, a new structure rises from the ground quickly, incorporating a nearby shallow cave. That’s the Enclosure, the place where researchers who intend to study the Nuckelavee plan to lure one of the creatures. The construction has barely started, and there is much to do before it can hold its captive inside. Engineers, Arachne, Witches adept in Enchantment and Abjuration - all are welcome to lend their hands (as many as they can spare) in this scientific endeavor. It could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to further or even create a completely new field of study!
Mirrorbounds are encouraged to return and rest within the city, but should you decide to stay for the night, the moods are rather sour and tense. Still, people do try to enjoy the evening break, at least those who get it - night guards work in shifts. Someone makes a bonfire and encourages sharing stories as the night passes to lift morale. A chilling Nuckelavee scream might stop the relaxing and put everyone on edge. But it seems the creatures are refusing to come out just yet.
THE SLUMS 21st - 26th
Sprawling from the Other Side of the Bright Wall, the Outer City grows outward with no particular organisation or order, with buildings’ integrity decreasing the closer they are to the edge of the Wilde. While some of the inhabitants greet the aid provided with gratitude, there are many who treat it with distrust and their own fate at the mercy of yet another incomprehensible danger with blood-chilling apathy. Much work has been done by numerous Mirrorbound to help those living in the Slums but the memory of all those lost to the frost when the city shut its gates and left them to die casts a long shadow on all attempts to defend against this new threat.
Deprived of the comforts of magitech ubiquitous for the citizens of the city proper, the inhabitants of the Slums find their own creative ways to provide life’s necessities to each other. Carrying water has always been a task for younger ones in the families. A worrying number of those that go fetch water from a far away stream do not come home on time. They could have gotten distracted chasing a stray dog, roped in some mischief by other kids, or genuinely lost. With the new threat lurking in the darkness, people get increasingly nervous. What would look like harmless disobedience in quieter times now turns into an emergency. Investigate where the missing children have gone, find them and bring them home if you can.
Not all are happy for the help. There’s a certain figure frequently spoken about and often seen at the scenes of the especially vicious attacks: a man with unkempt hair and ragged clothing prophesying that those very horrors are no accident. That the beasts are a punishment for a terrible offence: accepting the foreign devils - those who came through the Mirrors - into the city. As time passes and the attacks continue, it starts to become obvious those who were in contact with the Mirrorbound are more likely to become targets of the hellish creatures, which lends credence to the madman’s words. Some denizens of the slums are just scared, but some become suspicious of the very presence of any Mirrorbounds in the area. Even those that come to help. Calm downthe fearful, convince the sceptics or find the sower of this panic and make him stop spreading his incendiary message.
Some people have locked themselves in their homes and refuse to go out. You could try to reason with them or simply bring supplies at the door. Or try to convince them to help with building a protective wall around the Slums, sturdy enough to stay. Some of the people who open their doors might show low-level signs of Cwyld infection. They wonder if you’re still willing to help them knowing that?
When the darkness of night emboldens the Nuckelavee to venture further into the Slums proper, a group of Mirrorbounds take to patrolling the streets. But they could use more help. Protect those unfortunate enough to walk the streets at that time, chase away or kill the creatures that dared to come closer, and fight to protect the poor souls they chose to hunt.
NIGHT OF THE HUNT (night between 26th-27th)
Are you prepared for the fight of your life? You better be!
A heavy blizzard rages on the night of the 26th, giving a strange glow to the camp in the darkness as the light is dithered among falling snowflakes. Visibility is low, but some believe that nature itself can be used to help the hunters and defenders. To those who wish to take on this responsibility, several enchanted wands are given, with quick instructions how to use them to direct the winds of the blizzard for a short time. They can be used either to protect the warriors or against the creatures. The wands have only a few charges and will break upon using them up.
Every Mirrorbound and Wilder either present from the start or joining the group through the portal connecting with Aefenglom will be given a quick rundown of the camp, where the protection wards lie, what powers the barriers, and where weapons can be found. There are two sets of barriers around the camp -- the outer one that has multiple holes for the creatures to pour into, and the inner barrier that has to be held at all cost, as it protects people within. The plan is to lure the Nuckelavee for a frontal attack, let them pass through the outer barrier, let the inner barrier stop them, and then— close the barrier behind them, effectively shutting them in a walled ring.
Then they can be exterminated safely. Stun them, kill them, use spells or pointy sticks or guns — and maybe just maybe you can capture one alive. Fortunately, they don’t seem to have any kind of natural resistance towards mundane or magical weapons. They are just tough to kill and incredibly vicious, but limiting their movement should do the trick.
The barriers and wards only last full-strength as long as they are powered so Witches not focused on fighting are encouraged to do a recharging run along the campsite. Anyone needing a breather from the fray or whose focus is better spent on support can also bring ammo, or more weapons to counter the broken (or stolen) ones. Dragging out wounded fighters into the safety of the camp and healing them is also an important task, as neither Mirrorbounds nor Wilders lack in people who would fight to their last breath.
That’s the plan. How does it go in reality, though?
The Nuckelavee attack starts with chilling shrieks all around the Outpost before they emerge from the darkness. Those who have not yet met any of them will have a chance to witness that their aggression and looks are as terrifying as the stories said. They resemble a horse fused with a rider, with sharp teeth and without skin, raw body exposed. The creatures are not infected but are vicious, hardy, and strong, and they hunger for human and Monster flesh alike. Some might pick up weapons thrown at them; others will circle and try to isolate their chosen targets. Should they be angered, while in a furious rage they gain both speed and strength, but they lose focus and lack strategic thinking. So enraging them can break the formation, but it also makes them far more dangerous up close. They are susceptible to both magical and physical attacks alike, and beheading (of either the flayed-open horse head or the screaming man's head) will put them down permanently.
Be mindful of your comrades! It’s easy to lose each other in the blizzard. Nuckelavee don’t bleed red (they don’t bleed much at all), so any red trails on the snow belong to an ally. Don’t let the beasts drag wounded away. Get them to the healers who wait within the camp enclosed with the inner barrier.
During the fight, several crystal devices that strengthen the outer barrier start malfunctioning. That means the outer barrier cannot be closed shut, meaning a change of plans is in order. Several brave volunteers are needed from among Wilders and Mirrorbounds to leave the safety of the inner barrier and take the battle directly to the creatures, while locating and exchanging the malfunctioning crystals. This is an incredibly dangerous job, and everyone willing to undertake it is encouraged not to do so alone. Once the trap is sprung and the outer barrier shut, it would also lock those volunteers out of the safety of the camp -- unless they’re willing to try a teleport spell or wait for someone inside to handle the teleporting for them. The help will come, but until it does, they are on their own and straggling Nuckelavee that did not fall into the trap might still pose a danger to them...
The fight drags for what feels like hours, and the air grows colder and colder. Meanwhile, some of the trapped Nuckelavee figure out that they might get into the camp if they find holes within the barrier -- and one makes its way inside. Through the heavy snow, it might not be obvious at first, but something is happening within the camp… The Nuckelavee that furiously breach the barrier wreak havoc behind the safe line, attacking anyone it sees until it’s killed or subdued.
Eventually, after what feels like an eternity, all of the creatures fall and the dead remain under the snow. Well… most of them. There were attempts to capture one of them alive, and while keeping them alive turns out to be even harder than just catching them (not only Nuckelavee perished that night… some might still want revenge for that, some want to end the threat once and for all), one of them remains. The battle has been won.
THE AFTERMATH (27th and later)
As day breaks over the horizon, the true damage can be seen. One Nuckelavee is thrashing, captured in the closed enclave. It howls and shrieks and won’t be reasoned with. It hates everything and everyone, and seems to be incapable of speech. Wilders have decided they will keep it alive for a week, and not a day longer (that is till 3rd September OOCly). Nuckelavee have proven to be cunning creatures, and the risk of it escaping is just too great.
Aside from that issue, there is still clean-up to be done, and mourning for those who have fallen in battle. The Wilders agree to give the Nuckelavee corpses to those interested in acquiring them for study/experimentation, but otherwise they plan on burning everything that’s left.
The following two evenings, there’s a victory celebration at The Sordid Shield. Everyone still able to stand is welcome, -- and drinks are free! Unfortunately, not everyone is happily drinking; there are those who lost comrades and are mourning the fallen. Others came out alive but require medical attention that on-field healers cannot give. The general mood could be described as grimly triumphant. The unexpected threat has been taken care of, but not without a cost.

This world for a working qiankun pouch!
But there was nothing to be done about that and in the fighting, he had ended up next to someone familiar]
Defense.
[This, he said as he pulled Sandu from its sheath. He had no extra defense of his own, but he could certainly manage offense]
no subject
Am I finally gonna see this reputed temper of yours? [Despite the gravity of the situation, Momo spares the time for a wry joke, because at times like this sometimes you just have to take your tiny chances for levity when you get them. His smile isn't bright as it usually is, though, running more along the lines of sly or possibly a bit feral.] Pick a target and I'll have your back.
[The best way to run defense for close combatants, he finds, requires him to do it on the fly so he can limit the enemy's ability to fight back rather than directly just toss up a barrier between them. Hence the "loading" of several barriers that the scrawled-out focuses on his arms are intended to do.]
no subject
Probably.
[Just being honest. If there ever was one, he was not the nicest person in a fight, especially if someone got in his way. And he was serious about taking as many of these creatures out as he could. If someone wasn't serious, they would be crazy to be here.
Jiang Cheng, rather than giving a possibly vague direction, pointed his sword at the creature that he was intending to take out. With that, he charged it]
no subject
The hands of the human "rider" are still a problem, though, and when one of them reaches forward, Momo draws his angle, prepares, and...snipes a barrier shot.
It rips through the veiny hand at speed, mangling it, before impacting the other hand and bubbling it similarly to the mouth. It essentially restricts the creature's weapons to the rider's head and its stomping hooves, which are still formidable but a little bit harder to take advantage of when locked in a melee fight.]
no subject
The rider's head was easier to avoid considering how low it would have to drop in order to use it. The hooves were more the danger as he got close to it. He knew exactly where he needed to aim, but without his cultivator powers, he had to be more creative. He aimed his sword right at it and stabbed right into, knowing that he wasn't going to kill it this way, but he was trying to bring it down. It was certainly not the most pleasant of things to do, but once he had essentially used his sword to force it down enough, that he was able to draw a knife and stab it in the head order to kill it. Then he pulled both blades out quickly]
Good riddance.
no subject
Better riddance if you decapitate it completely. They go down to head hits, but if you want to guarantee they stay down then one or other head's gotta be gone.
[Momo explains it like that kind of specific kill requirement totally makes sense to him for some reason. Which, coming from a world with zombie media that invariably calls for removal of the head specifically, it kind of is. He's pretty damn sure these things aren't exactly living, at the very least.]
no subject
Momo had wanted to see if he could see his temper? Well, he'd definitely get a glimpse of it now as his features darken and the line of his mouth became tense.
Old habits died hard. He was a sect leader in his world. His own sect was so afraid of him that no one corrected him. But he couldn't afford to burn bridges, especially right at this exact moment]
Fine. [His tone was certainly far more forceful for what he was actually saying and the pause between answering probably shows this was not his first answer] I'll do that next time.
[Based on the appearance, he would have hazarded a guess that these creatures were not alive as they knew it, like monsters in their world. But there was too much going on to debate this now as he quickly scanned for a Nuckelavee not currently engaged with someone, again indicating it, by pointing his sword at it.
Was it just him, or did this one seem... bigger than the last one?]
no subject
It seems he assumes right on that, because Jiang Cheng turns their attention to another one. This one is definitely noticeably larger, though, and Momo's eyes narrow a little as he puts his knife back in its holster.
He prepares the same set of barriers to fire, taking the teeth and claws out of the equation, but the moment he does he also reaches over his shoulder to grab the weapon he has most suited to a creature of this size. The solid wooden mace is a simple weapon, a hefty club studded with spikes, but brute force might be a boon when they're dealing with something too big to be easily brought down in two hits.]
I'll see if I can cripple it. [He darts ahead, free hand reaching under the back of his collar to pull it open for a few seconds. For whatever reason, it makes the nuckelavee focus noticeably more on Momo and let out an enraged screech, giving Jiang Cheng relatively free reign for a first hit.
The horse rears as Momo comes through, trying to drop onto him, but he slips through and manages to swing the mace hard at the joint of one of its back legs. It smashes the joint successfully, damaging the leg - but when the horse lands back on its front feet, it kicks out with the undamaged back one as Momo tries to dart out. Momo catches the brunt of the hit on his mace, but it still knocks him onto his back and a few metres away.]
no subject
Jiang Cheng watched as Momo pulled out the mace after trapping it with the same barriers as before. Nodding once as an indication he understood the plan, Jiang Cheng was only a few steps behind him. Enough that he could do what he was trying to without Jiang Cheng being in the way, but close enough that he could easily follow up.
Jiang Cheng missed the hooves as it came back down, hearing the sound of it hitting Momo though he can't see how. Using Sandu, he stabbed hard into its side, avoid any bones it might have had as he pushed as hard as he could. Grabbing his knife again, he stabbed the nearest knee joint when it had to stop flailing for a moment]
Stay down!
[Well, at least two injured legs were making it harder for it to stand and the force from pushing against Sandu was encouraging it to fall over so the heads were away from him. Flailing legs, but at least it would not be able to bite for the moment]
You alright?
[He called over his shoulder. Couldn't afford to have people going down right now]
no subject
Yeah, nothing broken. [He readies his mace again, swinging it down into one of the two remaining legs to properly disable it. The weapon crunches unpleasantly through flesh and bone of the lower leg, the weight of the weapon and the force of Momo's hit combined destroying the limb beyond hope of being able to support any more weight. With one leg remaining, it's unlikely to be standing up again anytime soon.]
I think we're gonna need a sword to get this one's head off. [He gestures towards Jiang Cheng's weapons. While Momo's hunting knife is handy for quick dispatch on smaller things, when it comes to bigger ones hunting knives are more about carving up something that's already dead.]
no subject
[He'd heard the sound of him grunting at the pain. Considering he had just gotten kicked by a very large horse, he would have been surprised if he wasn't in pain. Nothing broken was the best that could be hoped for right now.
He glanced back over his shoulder hearing the sickening crack of the mace hitting its leg. Good, it was unlikely to be able to get up. He nodded at the comment about needing a sword and nodded. With a swift movement, he pulled Sandu free. Ignoring any flailing and thrashing it was doing, he moved to be able to see its neck clearly before swinging Sandu and decapitating it]
Hopefully, that was the largest one we'll find.
[Partially because it was hard, but if it was the hardest... they were the two that took it out]
no subject
Strapping his mace over his back again for the moment, Momo looks over the area. Most of the other creatures around here look to be locked in combat already, so they may need to move a bit further around the perimeter to find others still raring to go.]
Let's move around a bit. Gives me a chance to check if anyone needs medical help, too.
no subject
[As much as he wanted to be able to brag about it - later - actually finding the biggest one and knowing it was the biggest one after all of them were killed... Oh well, could still brag about that one anyway.
He nodded his head once]
Yes, we need to make sure we don't lose people.
[And Jiang Cheng would follow to help guard him. Healers were just as important as fighters... since they made sure the fighters stayed alive to fight another day]
no subject
He points it out and shifts his trajectory, the nuckelavee rearing as if about to stomp on its unfortunate victim. Rather than try to repurpose one of his weapons to hit it, he scrawls a slightly different barrier focus on his arm and lets it off.
A small, very compressed bolt of barrier magic shoots forward and collides with the nuckelavee, catching it in the chest and knocking it back with a screech. The shield expands into a hemisphere over the wounded fighter, but it's more of a stopgap until they can take care of the creature.
Once they're a bit closer, Momo reaches for his throwing knives and hurls a few of them towards the nuckelavee's eyes. One hits cleanly and one still manages to sink into the socket area, mostly blinding it as it rears back and howls. It looks wounded already, with several slashes over the chest and around the neck - the Wilder must have gotten a few hits in first.]
Let's finish the job and then drag him out.
no subject
It did pay off for a lucky Wilder who had them spot him just in the nick of time]
Right.
[Jiang Cheng charged at the mostly blinded nuckelavee, drawing his knife. He aimed for the shoulder, sinking the blade in as he attempted to drop it low enough to be able to take off its head. Of course, it was flailing, which made perfect sense so he took his sword to one of his knees to try and disable it]
no subject
As such, he grabs for his mace again to coincide with Jiang Cheng's strike, but going for a back leg - the nuckelavee essentially has to pick which leg to try and save, and pulls up the one Momo is aiming at. It means it's got more pressure on the leg Jiang Cheng aims at when he hits it, and thus the strike brings it down further with so much weight on a now-injured leg.
Momo swings the mace back around to get a first strike in on the head, so it's easier to get rid of. It rips about halfway through it and crushes a lot of the bone, leaving the human head rather useless if still attached enough to keep the creature alive for now. Since he didn't shield the creature's extremities this time, though, it takes a swing with its humanoid arms and manages to score a few slashes down Momo's upper arm from the close melee position. Not that he seems to notice just at the moment.]
no subject
It slashed at him too and caught him on the arm as he was aiming for the head. He was far enough away that it ripped at his cloak but he didn't immediately notice blood. Not that he was looking for it. He was more focused on the head]
Enough!
[Not that it was REALLY going to listen to him, but he would scold it anyway as he wrenched the knife in more, which did indeed cause it to crumple forward. It took another swing at him and after a moment to get his sword around, he literally disarmed it before aiming his sword at its head to decapitate it]
no subject
Busted ribs. I can't fix this out here, it'll take too long. [Momo moves to pick her up , getting his back underneath hers so he can properly support her torso in the absence of a stretcher, and nods towards her legs.] If I carry her myself it'll put too much extra pressure on her ribcage, can you get her legs so we can carry her flat?
[It's not ideal, but at least Momo is doing the weirder half that's going to require him to move while basically bent double. They're pretty close to the inner barrier, at least.]
no subject
And it is hardly safe to do it here.
[Since then they'd all be a target until then.
He nodded his head once, sheathing his sword and knife and moving to pick up her feet so that she'd stay as flat as possible during transport]
At your speed.
[Since Momo was burdened by most of her weight and in an awkward position, it was just acknowledgment that he would control how fast they were going]
no subject
Momo keeps walking towards the makeshift medical area set up within, until they reach one of the "beds", mats laid out so people at least aren't being healed on hard ground. He crouches down, carefully rearranging himself so he continues supporting the woman with his arms and hands while turning around so he can lay her flat carefully.]
This'll take me a couple minutes, so you're welcome to head back out if you don't want to wait on me. [After directing that to Jiang Cheng, he speaks to the Wilder, very lightly tapping the outer layer of her clothing.] You mind if I open this up to get to the injury?
[The Wilder nods, apparently fairly used to this process, and shifts her arms out from her body a bit so he'll have an easier time pulling her sleeves down. He starts to open up her shirt quite promptly, but lets out a bit of a hiss through his teeth once he sees her undergarment layer - there's a patch of blood coming through that says a rib has probably come through the skin.]
no subject
He moved to help lay the woman on the mat. He nodded at the comment that it would take a few minutes, but even though he turned away, he didn't go maybe more than a few steps. That was actually more because a gentleman didn't look.
Well, at least until Momo made that sound, turning around to see the blood]
Anything I can help with?
no subject
Run up to the supply tent and ask them for a wound cleansing salve and some compression bandages. [They're not really used anymore in his time, but they're still a thing here so he's going to ask for them for immobilization purposes. Even after he heals the injury, the area will likely be painful and more susceptible to another injury for a few days yet.
Since he's going to have to actually clean the injury first, he places his hands on the straps of the Wilder's slip and waits for another nod from her before he slips it down far enough to see the wound. She's wearing an early form of brassiere underneath, so there's at least some level of modesty left above the bit of white bone jutting out from a lower part of her ribcage, and misshapen lumps underneath where another two ribs threatened to stab out. Resting his hands on the other side of her ribs, he murmurs a spell to help highlight any other injuries that might be under the surface, but besides the major break it largely seems to be bruising.]
no subject
He couldn't help but look at the injury. At least she wasn't exposed so he didn't feel... too weird looking. He had stood, waiting with the items asked for until Momo asked for them]
no subject
Can you uncap the cleanser and put it here, please? I'll need it in a moment. [He needs the cleanser before the bandages, but before that he needs to move at least the rib that's broken through back to somewhere less awful. The ones that have shifted but are still under the skin are within the bounds of a healing spell, but trying to heal something while it's sticking out runs the risk that it might damage the skin further while returning to its place.
It's not exactly nice work, but there's not much for it - he pulls at the skin gently so he can slide the rib back under the surface, just enough that it's no longer got skin between it and the bones it needs to be rejoined with. It's at this point he rinses the blood from around the wound area and his fingers and then goes for the cleanser, running a few sparks of magic through it to warm it up before going over the wound area with it. It shifts colours very slightly as it makes contact with the skin, some kind of magical ingredient seeming to be working as a cleaning agent as it sinks in and gives the skin and wound (and what's still visible of the bone through it) an unusual sheen.
Once that's done, Momo rinses his hands again and begins to write something down his forearm with one finger, scrawls that might've been characters once but have been done often enough to be illegible. He does it to the other arm as well, leaving a glowing trail of writing before he lays his palms flat an inch over where the damage is, the glowing writing seeming to consolidate and flow down to his hands, giving them that same warm, faintly pink glow.
The broken bones visibly start to move under the skin, retreating back to their place, and there's a quiet, but very audible crunching and grinding of bone that goes along with it. It's not exactly a pleasant sound, but Momo seems used to it.]
no subject
He stood back and watched while trying not to watch at the same time, waiting until Momo was finished or needed something else. At the very least, he did not seem squeamish as he watched this happening]

want to fade to black here? seems like a good end point
Sounds good to me
