[Closed] We work hard, and then we work harder.
Who: Edelgard von Hresvelg & Various
When: Early June
Where: Aefenglom and Dorchacht, and At Sea
What: Edelgard does some quests with her CR
Warnings: Violence, and Edelgard's usual warnings of human experimentation, blood in a vampiric context, and talk of death and war.
At Sea (For Corrin)
It's strange being on a ship, the rolling motions of the waves against the wood not enough to really bother Edelgard, though how much of that was her vampiric body and how much of it was her own fortitude was anyone's guess. Either way, she wasn't in her element and it probably showed in the stance she had adopted, staring stoically out over the moonlit water. The glimmer of silver off the horizon was entrancing, beautiful and distracting...but she couldn't deny that she was any less afraid of the water, no matter how it looked. Maybe it was strange since she didn't exactly need to breathe, but fears weren't easy to let go of.
Either way, she's definitely making waves in the bond, mulling over various things, and likely subconsciously calling out to at least one of her Bondmates.
Below Decks (For Byleth)
During the early hours of evening Edelgard's more active and attempts to be more social, since she can't exactly come out of her vampire-proof room during the daylight hours, or risk bringing people into it. It's simply a bad idea. She's not restless, exactly, but she has a lot of pent up energy. And even the Emperor isn't above pestering her other bondmate during their journey. So, she knocks on the door of Byleth's cabin...hoping to find something to occupy herself this evening. And time with a dear friend certainly is a good way to occupy oneself.
The Silent Forest (For Saber)
Edelgard was happy to take on this particular quest, and even happier to have the opportunity to do so with Saber. She'd seemed capable and competent during their meeting, and so when a pair of Wilder Witches were asking around for guards during this trek, it had seemed as good a time as any to get to know one another better. Fully armored, with Aymr slung over her back, the Emperor was covered in head to toe as the wagon the Wilders had brought rumbled out towards the forest path, the last rays of a fading sun not quite sunk below the horizon yet. An early "morning" for her, but they did need to get going during the daylight hours, and her enchanted clothing was good enough protection until night fell.
"Were you on the original expedition out here?" Edelgard asks of her companion, curious.

she's dressed in a fairly simple chemise when she opens the door, hair still a bit tangled. ]
El. [ byleth smiles, even as she's clearly still a bit tired. she opens the door wider for her to step inside. ] Come in?
no subject
[Edelgard is dressed, fully so. A blouse, long trousers, gloves, her usual attire for her "days" such as they were. And she's smiling as she steps inside, a cheerful and upbeat thing.]
I came to check on you. I felt you stirring. Are you sleeping well?
[She offers a wry smile, looking at the tangled mass of Byleth's hair.]
and...Do you want some help with that?
no subject
I think... I wouldn't mind the help. [ especially not from her. yeah, she can brush her own hair just fine, but...
it sounds nice. ]
no subject
I'd love to. If you want to sit down so I can reach.
[She's still a shorty.]
no subject
Of course.
[ she keeps her eyes on edelgard's for a moment before finally nodding, taking her hand as she steps towards the bed of her cabin and sits down on the edge. this kind of... easy intimacy is still new to her. ]
no subject
So, taking a comb, she slides up onto the bed behind her bonded and begins to gently arrange her hair.]
How have you found the trip thus far?
no subject
byleth keeps her eyes forward, tilting her head slightly. ]
I've... tried not to let myself enjoy it too much. This isn't for pleasure, after all. But I think I've found it agreeable. [ she lets out a breath. ] What about you?
[ she knows that edelgard doesn't do well with open water. ]

They also both share a bond with Byleth and Saber has to quietly wonder if they somehow sense one another through her.
"I believe so - the one to cleanse the initial leylines, correct? It was an... interesting time, right after I had arrived. Is this your first venture beyond the city?"
no subject
Edelgard laughs, not harshly, but still amused. She's been a regular outside the city since she arrived, even after her transformation.
"I was unable to go on that expedition because I was...in the process of completing my transformation." That is to say that she was dying.
"But I've traveled outside with some regularity before and after."
no subject
"Then you'll know what to expect," she opts for a slight change of subject, "When we were working on the leylines it was... intense. The shades seemed drawn to our work and there were times when it seemed like they might actually overrun us."
She shakes her head, "Hopefully this expedition will be calmer."
no subject
There have been some absolutely horribly dangerous brawls they've been involved with, if she's being honest. Fortunately, they know themselves, and shades are just as vulnerable to Aymr's edge as anything else.
"I do hope it won't be so strenuous, but I think we can handle it. There's plenty of others here, too. This seems like a good group."
no subject
"I don't think he's mentioned you."
Something else to discuss, even if their attention is on the road and the potential danger around them.
no subject
Edelgard isn't surprised by this information. The woman's name is Saber for crying out loud. That would draw him like a moth to a flame.
"In the version of Fodlan I come from, Felix is one of my most ardent supporters. In the one he remembers, we were enemies thanks to an unfortunate twist of fate. Here...we've managed to avoid conflict, and find an understanding if not the same friendship that I recall."

Good place to wrap, maybe?
Absolutely

The sun outside was still setting, hardly halfway to dusk. When Edelgard had told him she was ready to meet the rats the night before, an idle thought crossed Hubert's mind. He didn't know what difference it might make, but he was willing to take every step to make this process easier.
He stops outside his bedroom door, glancing at his Bondmate. Even with Edelgard's blessing, Hubert was still largely keeping the little beasts in the lab, but tonight their cage resided in his room. Meeting the rats for the first time underground in the cellar might start this whole affair off on the wrong foot.
"They tend nocturnally, if not as much as wild rats. I thought that, perhaps, it would be more disarming if you first laid eyes on them while they still slept."
Maybe it was a fool's thought. The rats represented something so much greater than a mere fear of the beasts themselves. Whether they were threatening or not may not even be an issue. Regardless, Hubert was willing to try. He was aware how out of his depth he was; emotional support was far from his strengths.
He made no move to open the door. Edelgard would do that when she was well and ready.
no subject
She steeled herself as she followed Hubert, listening to his words, and stared at the door for a moment.
"That's a good idea. I confess nervousness," as if he couldn't feel it, the blood rushing in her ears felt loud enough that he should be able to.
"But...I think it is time."
Slowly, she put a hand on the doorknob, turning it gently, and pushing the door slowly ajar with all the caution she might when entering a room she knew to be occupied by a dragon instead of a pair of rodents.
"A little light, if you would?"
no subject
His bedroom was spartan as always, with only a scares few personal items about; the Arrow of Indra propped up in a stand, a bookcase filled with textbooks and notes, and on the dresser, a tiny felt bat and a couple embroidered flowers. On a small table at the back of the windowless room sat the cage.
It's larger than the one the rats originally came in but not extravagant; just enough room for a couple shelves of varying height for the rats to climb on, a few curious small boxes with levers on them, and a wheel. On the bottom corner beneath one of the shelves, the two rodents had stuffed shreds of clothe into something vaguely resembling a next—they laid half-flopped and curled over each other, nestled into one sleepy ball of grey, white, and brown fur. To sensitive ears, the faint too-fast pitterpatter of tiny hearts could surely be heard.
Hubert almost left it at lighting the room; after a moment of hesitation, he placed a gentle hand on Edelgard's back. I am here. Something grounding, he could only hope.
no subject
Her own pulse quickened as Hubert's hand found her back and she stepped forward reflexively into the room. Her eyes watched the creatures in their cage with a fever-bright gleam, a sense somewhere between panic and curiosity rising up inside her. She'd heard enough about them now to have an idea of what the rats were like, how they behaved, and how harmless they were. Seeing them half-asleep helped, as he'd predicted, since she doesn't have to watch them move.
"...okay..." she murmurs, taking another step forward, eyes locked onto the cage. "This is...it's not so bad."
no subject
Hubert ghosts behind her, watching quietly—the creatures would probably stir if he spoke. As it was, the grey one's ears half-perked at Edelgard's words, little snout and whiskers lazily twitching as she sniffed about with her eyes still closed. Then, the rat tucked her head back down, tail curling about the brown-and-white rat as she cuddled closer to her nestmate.
no subject
She crosses the room in a few steps, looking down into the cage from about five feet away, giving herself plenty of room to retreat if need be.
"They...are...a little cute. In their own way."

This time, she's been letting herself experience the trip, which meant spending a lot of time up on the deck, even up in the crows nest a few times, just watching the water, feeling the roll of the waves, asking the sailors far too many questions.
It wasn't a vacation, but she was certainly treating it like one.
She was at the front of the ship when she felt that pull of Edelgard's discomfort. She knew her bondmate didn't exactly enjoy the sea, or water, but this felt a bit worse than the general anxiety she'd been picking up since they'd set out. So Corrin rose from her seat, letting the bond guide her along the ship until her bare feet came to a stop next to the shorter woman.
"Hey," she said as she reached out to catch the woman's gloved hand, giving it a squeeze.
no subject
"Good evening, you."
no subject
"Did you know this is only my second time on a ship like this?" She said suddenly, half-turning back to the other with a grin that was somewhere between sheepish and happy. She reached up to tuck some of her hair behind her pointed ear as she continued. "I mean, I've been in boats a few times, but anything this big? Just my second time." She laughed softly to herself.
no subject
She admittedly hadn't really asked too, too much about her bondmate's adventures prior to Aefenglom, but then they didn't really matter. They were in the past, much like Edelgard's conflicts were in her past.
Tilting her head to watch both the horizon and the younger woman, the Emperor allowed herself a smile as she enjoyed the way the light played along the contours of her face.
"I've only been on a few voyages myself. Enbarr has a port, but I personally am not fond of sea-borne travel. I can't swim."
no subject
Huh. That did put all the water into perspective, didn't it. Hm. She drew in a breath to shuffle her thoughts back around.
"But I can't imagine it's very hard, just..." She made a vague flapping gesture with her free hand that clearly indicated she had zero idea how to even begin swimming. At least she'd probably float...
no subject
Being a vampire is funny at times, and hey, dead jokes! Edelgard likes dead jokes.
Either way, she slips a hand around Corrin's waist and holds her, finally turning her gaze back to the moon as it rises above the cloudy expanse of water.
"As I understand it, if you fall in and get swept under, the best thing to do is slowly let out a little bit of air and then follow the bubbles up. By kicking."
